  • Blue Cross Blue Shield exposes 800,000 records
    November 2009 - Blue Cross Blue Shield's (BCBS) lost confidential information, including tax identification and social security numbers, for about 800,000 healthcare providers from all US and failed to properly notify those affected. The incident involved a stolen BCBS laptop and lead to an official investigation in the State of Connecticut on behalf of 18,817 health care providers

  • 500,000 cards exposed in Network Solutions breach
    July 2009 - Hosting company Network Solutions experienced a security breach in an ecommerce services system which resulted in exposing details for over 500,000 credit and debit cards. The data security mishap is the work of hackers who have penetrated the system and installed software that diverted transactions to a rogue server.

  • TJX data breach costs reached abou 180 million USD
    June 2009 - TJX experienced the largest data breach in history that exposed at least 45.7 million debit and credit card account. The company settled to pay 9.75 million dollars in a lawsuit brought by Attorney Generals in 41 states TJX had paid already payed another 40.9 million dollars settlement in early 2009 and organized a big sale for its customers throughout North America, to compensate for the data breach damage. The same source stated TJX had prepared a 118 million dollars fund to deal with the consequences.

  • 298,000 unique credentials stolen by botnet
    May 2009 - After infiltrating a well known zombie network, researchers investigating the Torping botnet discovered 70 GB of stolen data, including 298,000 unique login credentials. 8,300 credentials were used to login to 410 different financial institutions, 21% of them belonging to PayPal users.

  • 1 TB of data on the Clinton Administration gone missing
    May 2009 - The US National Archives have lost a hard drive containing no less than 1 terabyte (TB) of classified information from the Bill Clinton administration. The misplaced sensitive data also contained personal information of White House staff and visitors. The drive stored in an unsecured area of the National Archives also included logs of events, social gatherings, and political records, as well as the social security number of a daughter of former Vice President Al Gore.

  • FAA Data Breach Exposes Records of 45,000
    February 2009 - A breach reported by the Federal Aviation Administration has exposed the private data of about 45,000 employees, as a result of a hack in one of the FAA computer systems.

  • 1.5 million exposed in RBS WorldPay Breach
    January 2009 - Electronic payment services firm RBS WorldPay has admitted a breach that exposed 1.5 million payroll and gift card holders exposed to fraud and identity theft. The breach was caused by a group of hackers finding their way to the RBS network and accessing about 1.1 million social security records, along with other private details.
